Clean Slate: Michigan’s New Expungement Law

The Ministerial Alliance, in partnership with Jodi Switalski and Switalski Law & Consulting PLLC, have embarked on a collaboration to further fight systemic racism and social injustice in the criminal justice system through a program of sponsored expungements (clearing your criminal record).

Under Michigan’s new “Clean Slate” laws, it is now easier for individuals burdened by convictions to obtain expungement through the legal system. This endeavor seeks to break down the stigma and barriers associated with a record of convictions while increasing opportunities for employment, restoring a sense of independence and purpose for an individual and also increasing voter eligibility among many other benefits. If eligible, up to three felony convictions and an unlimited number of misdemeanors can be expunged however an individual must wait a minimum of three years from the date of completion of sentence, probation or parole (time varies with offense and certain offenses are not eligible). No more will the inequities or decisions of our past haunt us and this collaboration’s purpose is to begin the long process of social justice reform by addressing systemic racism and other inequities that have ravaged the criminal justice system. All legal services are donated by Jodi Switalski and Switalski Law & Consulting (if eligible) while costs and sponsorship opportunities through the Ministerial Alliance. This program is meant for individuals without the opportunity to obtain legal services for themselves due to cost prohibitions or other concerns. For more information, please contact…
